Sumantha passed away peacefully at Joliet Area Community Hospice on Monday, January 8, 2018.


Sumantha “Sam” was born November 16, 1925 in Joliet, Illinois to Mary Alice Parker and Walter Johnson, Sr.


Sumantha received her education through the Joliet Public School system.  She continued her education and graduated from Joliet Junior College.  She worked as a beautician for many years in Joliet, Illinois.  She retired from AT&T and moved to Louin, Mississippi where she lived until 2015 when she returned to Joliet because of her failing health.


She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, John Pitts (1970) and Floyd Moffett (1991); brother, Walter Johnson, Jr.; sisters Oqua Y. Johnson, and Asline (Lena) White; children, John R. Pitts (1997), Larletia (Letia) D. Pitts (2001), Anthony S. Pitts (2013), and Sylvia (Pitts) Sinclair (2017).


She leaves to cherish her memories her sister Dorothy Harris of Los Angeles, California, her children Charlene (Joseph) Pitts of Inglewood, California and Dawn (Lemuel) Snelson of Joliet, Illinois; sons, Darryl (Cheryl) Pitts of Victorville, California and Michael (Jennifer) Pitts of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren, John Pitts,  James B. Sinclair, Kenneth S. Pitts, Keith M. Snelson, Dina R. Pitts, Rachael Pitts, Monty Clark, Michael D. Pitts, Sumantha A. Lawson, Eric B. Graham, and Ashley Alvarado-Momeni, and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
